Grandmother’s Ways for Modern Days

grandmas-ways1Home Beauty Treatments

Through the ages, people have used homemade beauty treatments, from henna and kohl in ancient Egypt to the terrifying use of lead in face products in the 18th century. More recently, with the rise of the Hollywood film star, glamour has become even more important to women. Even before and during the Second World War, cosmetic houses were bringing out more and more ‘must-have products’, but during wartime it was very difficult to get hold of simple lipstick, powder or face cream. For this reason, ‘make do with what you have’ was what women such as my mum had to do.

When using anything on your skin, whether homemade or purchased, always test a small amount on a small area of skin first to see if you have any allergic reaction to it before using a large amount.

Brightening Mask

The apple in this mask seems to exfoliate the skin very gently and leaves it looking bright and clean.

Makes 1 application
• 1 dessert apple, peeled and cored
• 1 whole egg
• 1 tablespoon clear honey
• 1 tablespoon fine oatmeal
• 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  1. In a bowl, mash the apple with a fork and stir in the lemon juice.
  2. Stir in the egg and oatmeal briskly. Stir in the honey.

To use
Apply to the face and massage in; a lot will drop off, but if you do it over a clean sink you can use it again if necessary. Leave for 20 minutes, massage gently for a few seconds and wash off with cool water and pat dry.

Hair Rinses

Used after washing, a hair rinse can enhance shine and keep hair feeling fresher for longer.

Vinegar Rinse

Vinegar is a very old hair-shining ingredient and makes your hair soft and easy to manage. Don’t worry about the smell; once your hair is dry this will disappear! Most vinegar can be used, but I find cider vinegar best for all types and colours of hair. Red-wine vinegar is wonderful on all shades of red and auburn hair.

Makes 1 application
• 1 ½ tablespoons vinegar
• 500ml tepid water

Just stir the vinegar into the water and pour over the hair and scalp straight after rinsing out the shampoo. Do not rinse out.

Banana Hair Mask

This softens and smoothes hair

Makes 1 application
• 1 peeled medium banana
• 1 tablespoon clear honey
• 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt

Cut up the banana and put the pieces in a bowl, then mash well with a fork. Stir in the honey and yoghurt.

To use
Apply to unwashed hair and massage into the scalp and to the ends of the hair. Wrap the head in cling film or use a shower cap. Leave for at least 45 minutes before rinsing and shampooing the hair.grandmas-ways2
